The Story of Atelier Musu

There are mornings in Japan that stay with you.

This one was in Sapporo. A small roastery, not much to see from the outside. Inside, a man was lining up his beans, observing them, smelling them. No screens, no timers. Just experience and binchotan — that Japanese oak charcoal that burns smokelessly, at a constant temperature, roasting the beans from the inside out without ever rushing them.

The coffee in my cup that morning was nothing like what I drank in France. No aggressive acidity, no unnecessary bitterness. Just a depth and roundness I hadn't encountered before.

When I returned, I looked for where to buy this coffee in France. I found nothing.

That's where Atelier Musu began.

I had spent several years in Japan. I had time to understand that the best Japanese products don't travel — not because they are impossible to find, but because no one really goes looking for them. Teas from Kyushu grown on volcanic soils by families who still work by hand. Coffees roasted using methods that industrialists abandoned long ago. A decaffeinated coffee processed with cutting-edge German technology that preserves most of the aromas — the one some Japanese gourmet restaurants serve with dessert, for lack of anything better.

Products I had drunk there and couldn't find anywhere here.

So I decided to bring them back myself.

Without plastic — because you can't be demanding about the product and careless about the packaging. Without unnecessary intermediaries — because each additional link moves further away from the producer and the truth of the product. And without compromise on selection — because that's the only reason to exist.

Why Musu?

In Japanese, musu means to infuse. It's the moment when water meets the leaf or the bean — brief, decisive, revealing. Everything that came before — the terroir, the harvest, the roasting — all plays out there, in that cup.

This name naturally came to mind. Because, ultimately, that's exactly what it is: what matters is what's inside.

Atelier Musu. Craftsmanship in every cup.
